I was tasked to take this existing magnetic read head mounted on a butterfly spring and modify it like the model in the picture below.

This is essentially the same head with a slightly different spring design that is shorter. Being shorter, its not fair to call it a spring any longer. Its basically a head mount at this point!

Here is the first part that was modified in the fixture I designed and machined shown in the photos below.

The spring material is 301 stainless ¾ hard.

Holes are 0.057 diameter

The additional screws on the outer wings of the spring were an after thought after the 2 screws that are holding the head down were not enough as the wings were flopping around too much. The 2 screws are overlapping, you can see the spacer used in the machined fixture photo below to accommodate this overlap.

The original springs were mounted in the top position and machined to add the slot and hole. After machining they are moved to the lower position to have the wings machined off. Notice the small spacer which accommodates the overlapping screw heads.
