Need
to make a large number of these small metric spacers.
Building
them in the SLS 3D printer is not a problem, but harvesting them from the
build cake is troublesome!

The
idea is to nest the spacers together inside of a cage that will contain
them when trying to separate the spacers from the
un-sintered powder.

Here you can see the
build cage containing all of the
Spacers. The spacers
are all nested in 49 x 7 array
And the cage is
assembled around the array of parts.
The cage and lid have a
0.030” gap between all of the
mating surfaces so they don’t adhere to
one another
during the build process.
There are 4 pins, one on each
side that keep the cage
and handle from coming apart
until you release them. This
facilitates doing a thorough
job cleaning the parts with compressed
air without
losing any or having to
handle them by hand.

The cage and handle
separated exposing the individual cleaned spacers ready for use. The hole
in the handle allows you to blow compressed air in through the handle
during the cleaning process. After cleaning the parts, I don’t think that
neither the handle nor the hole is necessary at all. Maybe I’ll change
the original design to incorporate a perforated lid without a handle.

The part dimension
should be 6mm long by 6mm diameter and 3.2 mm ID. These parts easily fall
within the tolerance needed for this part. Further cleaning and glass
beading would probably yield even closer dimensions.
