I have a room that is ~14’ xx 20’ its
open on one side to the kitchen and the rest of the house. The other wall
has a 10ft sliding glass door onto the patio and an 8’ window on the back
wall.
I am planning on using some QPD-2008 motorized drop
down speakers in the ceiling and 2 or more DIY subs at some point. Until
I build them I will be using 3 M&K 12” sealed subs.
Currently I have a 60” Sharp Aquos. Would like to
upgrade to something larger in the next couple years but this currently works
well with our seating position.

In this
view the Left and Right speakers are about 124” apart and in line with
the side surrounds. This position puts about 2/3 of the speaker outside
the maximum 60 degree angle suggested by Dolby.
This
also puts the speakers further off axis for
hitting the sweet spot. I may be able to adjust the angle of the tweeters
for better dispersion.
I have
another view with the speakers on 85” centers in line with the rear surround
speakers.
I
realize this isn’t the perfect solution no matter what but I'm trying to
make the best decisions on where to place the speakers for the best
performance.
I'm looking
for advice on my scenario.

This
image shows the L and R speakers on 85” centers, closer to the sweet spot
on the couch.
Another
issue is to place the speakers in the 3rd bay will require me
to relocate the ceiling fan. I’d prefer to just place them in the second
bay but this places the sweet spot at about your knees.
Any
opinions on how much worse this would sound?

The 2d drawing here shows the L and R speakers on both
85 and 124 inch centers.
You will also notice that the side surrounds are
slightly ahead of the sweet spot by a few degrees. This is necessary because
of the joist layout and the placement of a HVAC duct in the next bay
back.

Another
option would be to use 2 speakers for the center channel. This may
eliminate the need to relocate the ceiling fan as they would be far
enough apart to not interfere with the fan blades.
When I
get home I will have a closer look at this.

The rest of these images show various dimensions.
Am I way over thinking this?

In this drawing you can see how the den is open to the
rest of the house.

This layout is more accurate than the image above but doesn’t
show as much of the whole house floor plan. All of the equipment will
live in a rack inside the media closet.
When we remodeler, the wife’s requirements were that I
couldn’t have stacks of equipment in every room with every TV.

These picture
